Ministers End Recall Effort
A two-month campaign by black ministers to force Mayor Laura Miller of Dallas into a special recall election ended when they decided not to submit thousands of signatures for verification. Representatives of the group, Clergy for Recall, indicated earlier that they had secured the requisite 72,873 signatures, but after a meeting at Mount Tabor Baptist Church, the group dropped the effort. The pastor of Mount Tabor, the Rev. S.C. Nash, told The Dallas Morning News that the group, which had argued that the mayor had not addressed blacks’ needs, decided against a divisive campaign after meeting with several City Council members and the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce.
